Are there other applications for this technology?
Apart from the production of utility scale electricity, there are many other applications for kite power systems. A system producing power in a 'pumping cycle' described above could be redesigned to pump or pressurize water directly, which could be used for irrigation, pumped storage or even desalination. Production of liquid or gaseous fuels via the electrolysis of water into hydrogen is also a very interesting application. Researchers from Korea have published a paper [10] describing a ship towed by a giant Para-foil, producing electricity by means of dragging water turbines and using it to produce liquid fuels which are then stored on-board and delivered to port cities once the onboard capacity is reached.
